WONDERFUL 1840s EMBROIDERY MOURNING PICTURE – SCHOOLGIRL NEEDLEWORK
$1,200.00
Here is a wonderful “schoolgirl” textile from I believe France. I was told it was purchased there, but it might also be American. The embroidery is excellent with no staining, missing stitches, etc. It depicts a young woman with book (Bible?) in hand standing before a dark urn with a dark drape. Possibly a lover or a father? The border appears to be paper or vellum and has hand painted sprigs painted on it. There are three creases on the vellum, two at bottom sprigs and one at top, but does not detract from excellent image. Frame size is 16″ x 16″ x 1″. and picture size is 13″ x 13 1/2″. A new paper backing was placed on the piece before I received it and I do not remove the dust covers so there may be some information written on the back. I believe this is the original frame and hook at top of frame, and possibly the glass is original as well. I also believe it dates from the 1820s-1840s. (The colors are bright on this embroidery piece, my flash would not go off my camera. So sorry for the glare.)
